Most WordPress sites are not slow or invisible because of one big problem. They lose ground on a dozen small ones: a page with no meta description, a product photo with no alt text, a 2 MB hero image, the most important image on the page waiting its turn to load. Each fix takes minutes. Nobody ever gets to them. Starting this week, every site on a TopSyde plan gets two new tools that do: Auto SEO and Auto Speed. They run once a week, they make only changes that are safe to automate, and every one of those changes can be undone with one click.

Small gaps cost more than they look

Here is what a typical site audit turns up, and why each item matters.

Missing meta descriptions. When a page has none, Google builds the search snippet from whatever text it finds on the page, which is often a cookie banner, a navigation label or the first line of a footer. Google's own documentation says it may use the meta description for the snippet when it describes the page better than the on-page text. No description means no say in the one sentence a searcher reads before deciding whether to click.

Missing alt text. Screen readers announce an image without alt text as a file name, or skip it. Image search has nothing to index. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 1.1.1) require a text alternative for meaningful images, and most sites have dozens of uploads that never got one.

Heavy images. Google's own comparison found WebP images are 25 to 34 percent smaller than JPEGs of comparable quality. On an image-heavy page, that difference is most of the page weight.

A slow main image. Google counts a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less as good. The largest image on a page is usually what that metric measures, and themes often lazy-load it by accident, which tells the browser to fetch it last.

None of this is hard. It is tedious, it never ends because new pages and uploads keep arriving, and it is exactly the work that slips when everyone is busy. Agencies bill hours for it. Plugins nag about it. Our WordPress SEO checklist lists it. We decided the better answer was to have it done for you.

What Auto SEO does each week

Once a week, Auto SEO reads the published pages on your site and looks for two gaps: posts and pages with no meta description, and images with no alt text.

For a missing description, an AI model reads the page itself and drafts a summary of what the page is about, written for a searcher. For missing alt text, the model looks at the image itself, in the context of the page it sits on, and describes it. It does not guess from a file name.

A few rules keep this safe:

  • It only fills empty fields. A description you wrote, or one your SEO plugin already holds, is never replaced.
  • It works with the SEO plugin you already run. If Yoast, Rank Math, All in One SEO or SEOPress is installed, Auto SEO writes through that plugin and only where the plugin's own field is empty.
  • Decorative images that are marked to be skipped by screen readers stay skipped.
  • If you edit a page after a description is drafted, your edit wins.

What Auto Speed does each week

Auto Speed starts from evidence, not guesses. Each week it runs Google Lighthouse against your pages and acts only on what the report flags.

When Lighthouse names an image as the page's largest element and reports that it is lazy-loaded or not prioritized, Auto Speed gives that image loading priority, so the browser fetches it first.

When Lighthouse flags a JPEG as heavier than it needs to be, Auto Speed creates a lighter WebP copy and serves it in place of the original. Your original file is never modified or deleted. The copy is only used when it is meaningfully smaller and visually indistinguishable from the original, and every check runs again before anything goes live. Our guide to WebP conversion on WordPress covers why the format matters.

Auto Speed also knows when to stay out of the way. If your site already runs a page-optimization plugin such as WP Rocket or Perfmatters, Auto Speed holds its own changes rather than fight it. If you have already set a loading priority on an image yourself, yours is kept.

What neither tool will ever touch

The list of things we chose not to automate is as deliberate as the list of things we did:

  • The content you wrote, including page titles and existing descriptions.
  • Robots and noindex rules, canonical tags and redirects. One wrong change there can remove a page from Google, so a person decides.
  • Structured data that makes claims about your business, reviews or FAQs.
  • Script deferral, CSS removal and file combining. These can break menus, sliders and forms in ways a report cannot see, so they stay with a developer who can look at the page in a browser.

That last rule comes from experience. A common speed trick is to strip version strings from asset URLs, and on one site it served stale page-builder files until someone noticed broken layouts. A tool that can do that unattended is not a tool we want running on your site.

Every change has an undo button

Both tools appear as cards in the Insights tab of your site in the portal. Each card shows what the tool changed and when, and each one has a Roll back button.

A rollback removes that tool's changes from your site and clears the page cache. It is not marked complete when the command runs. It is marked complete when every affected page has been loaded again and confirmed clean. If a page is still serving an old cached copy, the rollback stays visibly in progress until it is not.

Changes also undo themselves. If a change cannot be confirmed after it is applied, or a page measures worse than it did before, it is reverted automatically and the card tells you why.

You can turn either tool off for a site at any time. You can also just ask your developer.

Why we built it into hosting

Most hosts sell speed and SEO help as an upgrade, an add-on plugin or an hourly retainer. We think the safe, repetitive part of that work belongs in the plan, for the same reason daily malware scanning does. TopSyde Sentinel already reads every site we host from the outside, every day, to find and remove malware. Auto SEO and Auto Speed apply the same approach to the small fixes that keep a site discoverable and fast.

The rest of our hosting stack is on the record too: Kinsta on Google Cloud, Cloudflare at the edge, our own portal and a senior developer you can call.

What these tools do not promise

Auto SEO and Auto Speed improve your site's technical readiness. They do not guarantee a ranking, a traffic number or a PageSpeed score. Search engines change how they work without notice, and content, competition and links still decide most of where a page lands. Some weeks a site has nothing to fix, and the tools change nothing.

What they do guarantee is that the small gaps stop piling up, and that you never need to undo something by hand.

Turn it on

If you host with TopSyde, open any site in the portal, go to the Insights tab and turn on the Auto SEO and Auto Speed cards. The first tune-up runs within a day, then weekly.

If you are not with us yet, both tools come with every plan at $89/mo per site, alongside daily Sentinel scans, tested updates, daily backups, free migration and support from a senior developer in under 2 hours during business hours. Every plan has a 30-day money-back guarantee. The spec sheet lists everything included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Auto SEO overwrite my existing meta descriptions?

No. It only fills fields that are empty. A description you wrote, or one stored by Yoast, Rank Math, All in One SEO or SEOPress, is left exactly as it is.

Does Auto SEO work with Yoast or Rank Math?

Yes. When one of the major SEO plugins is installed, Auto SEO writes through that plugin's own field, and only when that field is empty, so your plugin stays the single source of truth.

Can Auto Speed break my site?

It is built not to. It only makes changes that do not alter layout, never modifies your original image files, steps aside when another page-optimization plugin is active, and reverts any change it cannot confirm. Every change can also be rolled back from the portal in one click.

Does it cost extra?

No. Auto SEO and Auto Speed are included in every TopSyde plan at no additional charge.

Will this improve my Google ranking?

It fixes the technical gaps that hold pages back, such as missing descriptions, missing alt text and slow main images. Nobody can promise a ranking, and we do not. Content and links still do most of the work.
