Outcome

A 77 MB homepage video is now 10.9 MB, and the page no longer freezes on a phone.

A home and interior design magazine opened every visit with a 77 MB 4K video. TopSyde shrank it to 10.9 MB, cleared the scripts that blocked the page, kept 135 updates flowing and the site online every day.

The Challenge

A design magazine lives on its pictures, and this one led with a full-screen 4K video. It looked right, but at 77 MB it was the heaviest thing on the site by far, and it was the first thing every homepage visitor downloaded.

  • A video bigger than most whole websites. 77 MB on every homepage visit, on every phone, on every connection.
  • A page that froze while it loaded. Scripts ran in an order that held the page still for more than half a second on a phone, and one of them threw an error.
  • Upkeep that never ends. A magazine and two directories means a long list of plugins, each one needing updates every few weeks.

The Approach

Step 1. Shrink the video, keep the picture

We re-encoded the homepage video from 77 MB to 10.9 MB on our own machines and cleared the old file from the CDN so every visitor got the new one.

Step 2. Unfreeze the page

We changed which scripts wait and which load first, which fixed a script error on the page and took total blocking time on a phone from 622 milliseconds to zero between October 7 and October 29.

Step 3. Take the upkeep off their desk

Since April we have applied 129 plugin updates and 6 WordPress updates, each one backed up first and health-checked after. We also removed an old inactive plugin with a known security hole before it could be used.

The Results

  • The homepage video is 86% lighter, 10.9 MB instead of 77 MB.
  • The page never freezes while it loads. Total blocking time on a phone went from 622 milliseconds to zero.
  • The page looks complete in 2.3 seconds on a phone, down from 8.7, on our homepage test.
  • 135 updates applied since April with nothing for the magazine to do.
  • No downtime in 84 days of monitoring.

Why It Worked

  1. We fixed the heaviest thing first. One file made up most of the homepage. Shrinking it helped every visitor at once.
  2. Speed work and upkeep are the same job. The developers who apply the updates are the ones who notice when a script misbehaves, so fixes land in the same pass.
  3. Nothing waits on the client. A magazine team should be writing. Updates, scans and backups run without them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did the video look worse after it was shrunk?

No. It is the same video, re-encoded for the web at a size phones handle well.

Do the speed numbers come from real visitors?

The blocking time and page-complete figures are from our homepage test on a phone, run on October 7 and October 29. The video size is the file itself.

What does a single site like this pay?

The standard $89 a month, with updates, daily scans, backups and developer time included.
